This consortium applies scanning probe microscopy [SPM] and FTIR microscopy in combination with existing results from theory-supported studies of native cellulose surfaces to achieve a corresponding characterisation and understanding of cellulose-hemicellulose-lignin systems, integral cell walls and model pulps. We also study how enzymatic degradation affects the fibre, fibril and microfibril surfaces. The department of physical chemistry at Åbo Akademi University has its main focus on SPM characterisation of the microfibrils, with the aim of localizing the cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin on the surface of both native and enzymatically treated fibrils.Topographic, friction and phase imaging will be used together with force-distance measurements.
