Principally the immune mechanisms in fish are similar to those of higher vertebrates. The most important cellular components, signal substances etc. are similar to those in higher animals. In fish, however, the system is more primitive, the functions are slower and "less effective".We know that some chemicals have stimulating effect on the immune functions in fish, other have an immunosupressive effect. In the project works we try to clarify the effects and mechanisms in fish of some compounds (glucans, selenium etc.) with well known immunostimulative effects in higher animals. Moreover we try to evaluate the immunomodulartory effects of antimicrobial drugs used in fish farming. Our aim is to obtain results and data based on which we can work out effective immunoprophylactic programs for the fish farming industry and with application also in immunotoxicology.
