LANGUAGE: SPA ABSTRACT: Giving first a short view on the situation in Nicaragua and El Salvador, Caballeros points out the factors of the economic crisis of Central America. He explains how the efforts of the Sandinista government and the Salvadoran popular movement to improve the situation of the poorest people have been stopped by the prolonged conflicts. The huge foreign debt of the countries in the region - like elsewhere in Latin America - makes more difficult the efforts to estabilize the economy and the society. The crisis affects all aspects of the socio-economic and political life, and it is difficult to calculate all it's social impacts, but for example, 17 % of the population of Central America is participatying in the migration. The productivity of the region has been staying on the level of 20 years ago. According to Caballeros Central America still have its human resources available, but as a first step there is a need to restore the peace, the order and mutual confidence, and a real and vital democratization inside each country. The second step would be to make a long plan economic strategy for the region, to look for new types of development and integration, taking into account the social-political changes in the five countries and the transformations of the international economy.
