ABSTRACT: On the 4th of May 1990 at the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua the Autonomy Commission was installed. This means a real victory for the ethnic minorities of the zone. But there is a shadow of tension in the region because of the new decisions of the central government which seem to destroy the hopes of the autonomy. The government led by Violeta Chamorro wants to weaken the role of the regional governments, and this means that the new Autonomy Commission shall be weakened as well.

ABSTRACT: The autonomy of the Nicaraguan Atlantic Coast was stated in 1987.The new government of Violete Chamorro elected in February 1990 promised respect the agreement, and promote development programs for the community.The indigenous ceased the armed struggle, but the situation in the region is still very precarious.The central government does not accept that the Atlantic Coast community would administrate the natural resources, including the gold mines and the fishing industry, considering these vital for the country's economy. The autonomy status is not respected, and the miscitos warn with a new civil war.

ABSTRACT: The Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua is home for six ethnic groups, speaking four different languages.Of these, the majority and culturally dominant group are the spanish-speaking mestizos who have imigrated at different periods from the Pacific Coast.Two minotiry groups, the Sumu and Rama Indians, are direct descendants of indigenous peoples, while the Miskitu, the largest minority, descend from Sumus in intermarriage with English pirates and escaped African slaves.The second largest minority is formed by English-speaking Creoles, and there are also small populations of Carifuna and Black Caribes. The Atlantic Coast so formes a multiethnic community, different to the Hispanic Pacific Coast.Its autonomy is stated by the Nicaraguan laws.
