ABSTRACT: This report examines the investigations and prosection of human rights abuses attributed to the Guatemalan armed forces under the current civilian government. Part one describes investigative procedures that might apply to military abuse, including the role of the judiciary, the Attorney General, the National Police and governmental human rights offices. Part two is an analysis of investigations and judicial procedures in nine cases of murder and disappearence with 24 victims, all attributed to members of the armed forces. Part three is an analysis of discipline within the military. This section describes the military justice system and includes a summary of action taken by military courts in various categories of crime.
