Neuropeptide FF (NPFF) is a newly discovered and cloned neuropeptide, which is expressed almost exclusively in the central nervous system. It is involved in pain transmission, regulation of automatic functions including blood pressure and hormone secretion.Depending on the site of administration, NPFF either attenuates or potentiates the analgesic effect of morphine. In previous studies we have characterized the molecular forms, distribution and pathways of NPFF-like peptides in the brain.Current studies are aimed at identification of brain areas and cell types which express NPFF, and regulation of the NPFF gene in rat and human nervous system.Characterization of the signal transduction mechanisms and cloning of the receptor(s) are also important goals, because NPFF may offer new possibilities to treat pain and blood pressure
